Frequently Asked Questions

The following is a list of answers to questions commonly asked by visitors regarding Divorceware and Child Support Calculator software.

Why does the child support calculator tell me it has expired, even though I just installed it?

If you already installed the Calculator by itself, merely delete the directory where the Calculator was installed and reinstall, selecting both the Child Support Calculator and Divorceware for installation.  If you have continuing difficulties, contact us via e-mail at gblack@burgoyne.com.
Why can't I obtain the free trial CD unless I'm a Utah attorney?
Divorceware is intended for use only by licensed Utah attorneys as an aid in handling divorce cases.  Because Divorceware is written specifically for attorneys, many of the concepts and language used in Divorceware would probably not be clear to non-attorneys. In addition, the cost of producing the trial CDs forces us to limit distribution to our intended target market.

In the future, we anticipate writing a version of Divorceware for sell to the general public.

What are Divorceware's recommended hardware and software requirements?
While Divorceware should work on any computer using Windows 95 or Windows 98 as its operating system, we recommend the following for best performance with Divorceware:

IBM compatible computer with Pentium, Pentium Pro, or Pentium II  mainboard.

Sixteen (16) megabytes of RAM (more is better).

Windows 95 or Windows 98 installed as the principal operating system.

A CD ROM drive (8x or faster recommended).

A Windows 95 or Windows 98 compatible laser printer (Hewlett Packard Laserjet 3 or higher recommended). Some documents will not print properly with Hewlett Packard Laserjet 2 printers or older printers which lack sufficient memory or font-handling capabilities.

The following installed fonts (all of which are standard fonts included with Windows 95 and Windows 98): Arial, Times New Roman, and MS Sans Serif screen font.

Will Divorceware work with Windows 98?
Yes.  Divorceware is fully compatible with Windows 98.
Is Divorceware available for Window 3.1, DOS, or Macintosh?
No.  Divorceware is only available for Windows 95 and Windows 98.  DOS and Windows 3.1 are dead operating systems that will gradually be eliminated as more and more users convert to Windows 95 and Windows 98.  We did not feel it made any sense to spend the time and money needed to develop and support Divorceware for those operating systems.  The installed user base for Macintosh is so small that we also determined that it did not make economic sense for us to develop a Macintosh version.
I don't have a CD-Rom drive; Can I still purchase Divorceware?
While we will not provide a trial version of the software on 3 1/2" disks, we will provide the licensed version on 3 1/2" disks upon request.  In such cases we will charge a small additional fee of $10.00 to cover disk costs, mailing and duplication expense. We will not include the tutorial on 3 1/2" disks. CD-Rom is the most cost effective method of distributing the software. If you don't have a CD-Rom drive, we suggest you purchase one.
What monitor display settings are best for Divorceware?
Divorceware displays properly on monitors with a screen resolution of 800 x 600 pixels. Divorceware should be usable in other screen resolution settings, but the display will be less than optimum. While Divorceware will function in 256 color mode, we recommend 16 or 24 bit color (high color or true color) mode.

A screen resolution of 1024 x 768 pixels or higher may cause distortion of some of the buttons used in the software, and on some machines will not display text perfectly. The software’s performance should not be affected by the high screen resolution, but we recommend the 800 x 600 resolution for aesthetic reasons and to avoid distortion of the buttons and text (Note, this problem should now be fixed in the latest version of the ActiveX control used in the current build of Divorceware).

In resolutions lower than 800 x 600 pixels, forms may overlap, causing inconvenience to the user. Lower resolutions do not display pages and forms in the most optimum manner.

Display settings can be changed using the Display option in the Windows 95 or Windows 98 control panel.

Some of the distortion problems with higher screen resolutions are due to problems with the way Windows 95 works.  The introduction of Windows 98 has solved all of the screen distortion problems we previously noted under Windows 95.  If you upgrade to Windows 98 and still experience distortion at higher screen resolution settings, please contact us.

Also, some distortion problems are due to incorrect or outdated drivers.  Check with the manufacturer of your monitor for updated video drivers.

What can I do if documents do not print correctly?
Divorceware uses your computer’s installed Windows 95 or Windows 98 print drivers for all printing tasks. Because Windows manages the printing tasks, you should not have any difficulties printing unless your printer is not compatible with Windows 95 or Windows 98 or unless your printer is not set up properly.

Some older printers, such as the Hewlett Packard Laserjet 2 printer are not fully compatible with Windows 95 or Windows 98 and do not properly handle fonts. Some of the highly graphic forms in Divorceware will not print properly on such printers. We recommend you purchase a newer Windows 95 or Windows 98 compatible printer.

If a document will not print properly, first check the printer settings to determine whether you have selected the correct printer and the correct printer setting. (For example, setting the printer setting for a Hewlett Packard Laserjet 5M if you have an HP Laserjet 5 will cause some of the graphic-intense forms to print improperly). Also, some printing problems can be solved by turning the printer off, then back on again, and then printing your document.

Divorceware has been tested on various late-model Hewlett Packard Laserjet and Cannon bubble jet printers.

Also, very early versions of the trial CD may contain some printing errors because the development software from Microsoft which was used to produce Divorceware contained inherent printing problems.  Those problems should now be corrected by the release of Microsoft's Service Patches for the development software which we have incorporated into the licensed version of Divorceware and the Child Support Calculator.

The introduction of Windows 98 has further corrected printing problems which existed under Windows 95.  For example, spool32 errors, which Microsoft acknowledged were the result of a bug in Windows 95, are no longer a problem under Windows 98.

What can I do if I get an error message notifying me of a corrupt or missing file?
Deletion from your hard drive of any of the files required by Divorceware may result in one or more error messages notifying you of corrupt or missing files (Error 53 is a common error if files are missing or corrupt). Never remove a file from the Windows system directory or the Divorceware installation directory without first ascertaining that the file is not needed by Divorceware.

If you inadvertently delete a required file, you must reinstall Divorceware. To save client data in such event, copy the following files to another directory, reinstall Divorceware, and then replace the newly installed versions of the following files with the copies you previously saved to the other directory:

      Case.mdb
      Case2.mdb
      Case3.mdb
      Case4.mdb
      Case5.mdb
      Default.mdb
      Custom.mdb
If one or more of the foregoing files are corrupt or missing, then you may lose saved data. You may want to occasionally back up these files to avoid data loss in the event of a hard drive failure or virus.
What do I do if the CD does not autorun upon insertion into my CD Rom drive?
For Divorceware to autorun upon insertion of the Divorceware CD, autorun must be enabled in Windows 95 or Windows 98. The most common reason for autorun not to work on your computer is a disabled autorun feature in Windows 95 or Windows 98.

If autorun does not work on your computer, then to install Divorceware, browse the Divorceware CD in Windows Explorer and double-click on the file named Setup.exe or Divorce.exe (depending on the build you are using).

In rare cases, the Windows 95 dll (dynamic link library) files on your computer may be older than the versions of those files needed to properly use the Divorceware autorun capability. If you receive an error message indicating a missing dll file, follow the instructions in the preceeding paragraph to bypass autorun.

Why is Divorceware so expensive?
Because Divorceware is designed for such a small number of potential customers (Utah attorneys who practice divorce law), the price is higher than many other commonly-available software packages which are sold to much larger markets.  The production and marketing of software is an expensive process.  Normally such a specialized niche product would not be available in a state such as Utah at any price.  However, because of the unique skills of the attorneys who have prepared Divorceware, this one-of-a-kind software is available to Utah attorneys.

To resolve the concerns of various attorneys who have expressed interest in the software if offered at a lower price, we have recently introduced our Economy Version of Divorceware and the Utah Child Support Calculator.  The only differences between the Economy Version and the Standard Version are:

        (A)    The price of the Economy Version is substantially lower than the Standard or Profession Versions;

        (B)    The Economy Version does not include any free or reduced price future updates;

        (C)    Technical support is not available for the Economy Version; and

        (D)    The Economy Version is sold "as-is" without any warranty.

When you order the Economy Version we will ship the latest software build for the product ordered.

What should I do if I discover some aspect of the software that is not working properly?

The trial CD contains some known bugs and problems.  The known bugs are corrected by the licensed version.  For a current list of the known bugs and problems with the software click on the Technical Support link below.  Purchase of the licensed version corrects these bugs.  If you discover a bug or problem, please contact us via-email at gblack@burgoyne.com and describe the problem.  We attempt to correct any bugs as soon as they are discovered, and offer periodic service updates to licensed users to correct these problems.  If you are a licensed user of the software and are the first person to report a bug to us, we will provide you with a free copy of the service update which corrects the problem (even if you only purchased the Economy Version).
